Skeptical of the monolith of history, where science and technology are positioned towards progress, Thomsen draws meaning from where knowledge is not fixed but dynamic, inclusive and generative.  Her practice positions a feminist intervention on modernism – the body, its wisdom and the individual inquiry are celebrated.  The installation her penumbra at John Michael Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan WI is a response to artists Mary Nohl, Suzanne Harris and Maria Nordman. Within her penumbra,  Thomsen is orbiting the work and ideas of these women. While being pulled into their gravitational fields she is locating a proximity within their penumbrae.
